Dr Xuemeng Cao, Prof. Henderson's first ever PHD student, returns for a visit.
The DEAR centre welcomed Dr Xuemeng Cao, an original member, back to Warwick last month. Xuemeng is well known for her work on diary methods, and her incredible thesis, which DEAR Centre members consult frequently. She and Prof Henderson have co-edited two publications which both explore diary methods as a useful and often neglected form of research within higher education studies.
The publications reveal the benefits and challenges of diary methods as a mode of research within social sciences and how it offers a unique personal perspective on topics such as LGBTQ identities, faith, employment and more. Dr Xuemeng Cao focuses on the importance of diary methods as they capture life as it’s happening and uncover the emotional experiences of participants from their day-to-day reality rather than offering a polished version that can sometimes come from more formal and detached research methods such as interviews or questionnaires.
During Dr Xuemeng’s recent visit to the University, there was an insightful group discussion on Dr Xuemeng Cao's post-doctoral journey, including her positions at the Institute of Advanced Study at Warwick and through to her current work as a doctoral researcher at the at Xiamen University
