This norm could authorize military force in response to humanitarian crises. Drawing on diplomatic records and interviews, it shows how Brazil, Chile, and Mexico shaped R2P’s terms, making collective responses to atrocities possible while building safeguards against abuse. From these cases, I develop a framework I call “republican ordering,” arguing that weaker states seek rules and institutions that effectively address security challenges and constrain powerful states regardless of their intentions. This challenges accounts of international order that rest on great-power restraint. The argument runs from a century of Latin American diplomatic thought through to today’s debates over nuclear and autonomous weapons.

Current Students - UG Staff Research Current Students - PhD Current Students - PG Wed, 14 Oct 2026 21:02:42 GMT PAIS Web Resource 8ac672c7a133392901a13c397987698c 08/12 3pm-5pm: IPE Research Cluster session - A Feminist Political Economy of Trade https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/a-feminist-political-economy-of-trade
When: 3pm - 5pm, Tue, 08 Dec '26

Where: FAB 0.23

Adrienne Roberts & Silke Trommer present their new book ‘A Feminist Political Economy of Trade: Beyond Free Trade Feminism’.

Email Ben Clift (B.M.Clift@warwick.ac.uk) to register.

Staff Research Current Students - PhD Current Students - PG Tue, 27 Oct 2026 11:13:57 GMT PAIS Web Resource 8ac672c7a17b894f01a17d0f2ef1076d 20/01 12:30pm-2pm: PAIS Departmental Seminar /fac/soc/pais/events/?calendarItem=8ac672c6a176631701a17d13074327c5
When: 12:30pm - 2pm, Wed, 20 Jan '27

Where: E2.02

Bashir Abu-Manneh, University of Kent: “Disposable Palestinians: Israel's Wars and Genocide in Gaza”

Current Students - UG Staff Research Current Students - PhD Current Students - PG Tue, 27 Oct 2026 11:16:01 GMT PAIS Web Resource 8ac672c6a176631701a17d13074327c6 27/01 12:30pm-2pm: PAIS Departmental Seminar /fac/soc/pais/events/?calendarItem=8ac672c4a17662d601a17d230b773d44
When: 12:30pm - 2pm, Wed, 27 Jan '27

Where: Online

Priyanka Chandra, Jindal School of International Affairs: "Undisciplining IR: Beyond Mainstream International Relations"

Current Students - UG Staff Research Current Students - PhD Current Students - PG Tue, 27 Oct 2026 11:33:31 GMT PAIS Web Resource 8ac672c4a17662d601a17d230b773d45 10/02 12:30pm-2pm: PAIS Departmental Seminar /fac/soc/pais/events/?calendarItem=8ac672c7a17b894f01a17d2906000959
When: 12:30pm - 2pm, Wed, 10 Feb '27

Where: E2.02

Daniel Conway, University of Westminster: "The Queer Politics of Pride: Global LGBTQ+ Activism and Homocapitalism"

Current Students - UG Staff Research Current Students - PhD Current Students - PG Tue, 27 Oct 2026 11:40:02 GMT PAIS Web Resource 8ac672c7a17b894f01a17d290600095a 11/02 5pm-7pm: PAIS Departmental Seminar /fac/soc/pais/events/?calendarItem=8ac672c4a17662d601a17d2a6ec83d4b
When: 5pm - 7pm, Thu, 11 Feb '27

Where: TBC

Co-hosted with the Centre for Critical Legal Studies and Social Theory Centre

Current Students - UG Staff Research Current Students - PhD Current Students - PG Tue, 27 Oct 2026 11:41:35 GMT PAIS Web Resource 8ac672c4a17662d601a17d2a6ec83d4c 12/05-14/05: PAIS co-organises EUIA conference https://www.euia.eu/CALL-FOR-PAPERS/
When: Wed, 12 May - Fri, 14 May '27

PAIS is a co-organiser of the EUIA (European Union in International Affairs) conference, which means that PAIS colleagues do not have to pay a registration fee. Some of us are hoping to attend, and it would be good fun to go together if others are interested.

The call for papers is now open here: Call for Papers | #EUIA27 | 12 – 14 May 2027

The conference will take place 12-14 May 2027, with a submission deadline of 6 December 2026. It is a really good conference and it is very well attended. At the last one, the keynote was given by the European Commissioner for Enlargement.

The conference is focused on the EU in international relations, but your research does not need to be specifically about the EU. Work on global challenges and Europe’s role in addressing them would be very relevant, so there could be quite a broad range of projects that would fit.

Please contact Özlem Atikcan if you have any questions!

Research Current Students - PhD Impact Fri, 02 Oct 2026 08:17:30 GMT PAIS Web Resource 8ac672c5a0f6fb4701a0fbb09c5a4527
