For our first meeting of the year, we’ll be focusing on ‘Community Engagement through Education’ and collaborating with the Pedagogies of Public and Community Engagement Learning Circle. We’ll hear from colleagues across two spotlights, share findings from a new evaluation report on the first 5 years of the Collaboration and Coproduction Fund, discuss plans for the fifth iteration of our annual CO-LAB event and give attendees the chance to share opportunities as part of our ‘Front Door’ feature.

Spotlight 1: Ninna Makrinov

‘EmpowerAI: Engaging with local micro entrepreneurs to reduce digital exclusion’

Hear how Ninna and her team, in collaboration with Coventry Central Hall, are co-creating community engagement that empowers local micro entrepreneurs to integrate AI solutions to support their businesses and provides opportunities for students to work on real world problems.

Ninna Makrinov is an Assistant Professor (Research Methods) at WMG. She works with transdisciplinary approaches stemming from her training in psychology and business. She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE, pedagogic lead for the Digital Technologies and Machine Intelligence Education Group at WMG and leads the AI research, development and management module for the MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence.

Spotlight 2: Dawn Collins and Hollie White

"Co-Production of Case-Based Learning Materials: Capturing the Lived Experience".

Case-Based Learning is a small-group, student-led learning approach which fosters critical thinking and holistic, interdisciplinary problem-solving, and maintains the patient and/or population experiencing the health problem as the focal point of learning. Dawn Collins and Hollie White are Associate Professors at Warwick Medical School. This spotlight is in collaboration with the Pedagogies of Public and Community Engagement Learning Circle.

10/11 2pm-4pm: WIE/ WIHEA Academic Promotions Support Workshop 2026

Warwick Institute of Engagement's Promotion and Reward Learning Circle team up with Warwick International Higher Education Academy (WIHEA) each year to run support workshops for academic staff looking to apply for a promotion.

This years session will include information from WIE about putting together your Impact, Outreach and Engagement case, and from WIHEA who will talk through the process more broadly. Both teams will feature presentations from staff recently promoted, some advice on framing applications and plenty of time for questions and answers. The session is suitable for staff looking to apply to become a Assistant Professor/Associate Professor, and those looking to become a Reader/ Professor.

19/11 3pm-5pm: Launch of a new Practical Guide to Embedding Public and Community Engagement in the Higher Education Curriculum

References to public and community engagement have become near ubiquitous in the higher education context. Applications for research funding demand stakeholder engagement, universities integrate public engagement into their strategies, and the UK’s Research Excellence Framework 2029 includes “Engagement and Impact” as one of its three assessment elements. However, these activities often omit the integration of key actors in any university: taught students. The Pedagogies of Public and Community Engagement Learning Circle, shared by the Warwick Institute of Engagement (WIE) and the Warwick International Higher Education Academy (WIHEA) are delighted to announce the launch of a new curated handbook of 19 case studies of engaged pedagogic practice, developed by 91Ӱ��ƽ�� staff and students. Spanning across and beyond all faculties at the University, on a wide range of activities from podcast assignments to student-run teddy bear hospitals, the handbook covers engagement both within modules and outside the regular curriculum.
