for the detection of space debris TZID:Europe/London UID:20261026-8ac672c5a15746b001a1683b53666c18@warwick.ac.uk CREATED:20261023T100800Z DESCRIPTION:Space debris is a present and growing hazard for satellite co mmunication and space exploration. There are efforts to find new ways of detecting space debris to avoid collisions with spacecraft at different altitudes\, to complement traditional methods such radars optical teles copes. In this talk we will present research on the detection of space d ebris and satellites in the ionosphere by studying different kinds of pl asma waves (whistlers\, lower hybrid and magnetosonic waves) that are em itted when the satellite propagates through the ionosphere and interacts with plasma irregularities. The Canadian Cassiope/e-POP satellite\, ope rated by University of Calgary\, sometimes observes enhanced wave activi ty in the 1-10 kHz range during conjunctions with another satellites or space debris\, in the low earth orbit (LEO) 350-1000 km. There are also natural whistler wave emissions due to lightning strikes and man-made tr ansmissions by VLF stations for submarine communication\, which are easy to identify. We will show modelling results\, including space craft cha rging\, and simulations of wave excitation by the charged satellite as i t propagates through space\, and how these waves can be detected and int erpreted based on their frequency and polarization. Understanding the physical mechan isms that re-distribute the angular momentum within stellar interiors re mains one of the main challenges in astrophysics. In radiation zones in which a fluid is considered to be stably stratified\, candidate mechanis ms for the angular momentum transport include gravito-inertial waves and shear-driven turbulence. In the seminar\, I will talk about some fundam ental fluid dynamics of waves and shear instabilities in stellar radiati on zones\, which are stratified and (differentially) rotating. I will di scuss about how horizontal and vertical shear flows could lead to turbul ence via various instability mechanisms [1\,2]\, what the roles of waves and instabilities are in dissipation and transport of turbulence [2-4]\ , and how these waves and instabilities could impact stellar evolution p rocesses. A key observational signature of solar and stellar flares is the presen ce of quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs)\, which are thought to reflect fu ndamental processes of impulsive energy release. QPPs can therefore prov ide a useful diagnostic for determining whether EUV brightenings share t he same underlying mechanisms as larger-scale flares or instead represen t a fundamentally distinct regime. In this talk\, I will present observa tions from the high spatial and temporal resolution of the Solar Orbiter /Extreme Ultraviolet Imager\, showing clear evidence that QPPs are prese nt in EUV brightenings. I will characterise their properties over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales and show that their periods extend from a few seconds to several minutes\, comparable to those observed in larger flares. I will also discuss the relationship between QPP damping time and period\, which follows a common power-law scaling for both EUV brightenings and EUV solar flares. When combined with previously report ed X-ray QPPs from solar and stellar flares\, these events align with a single scaling trend spanning many orders of magnitude in scale. This ap parent universality suggests that QPPs in small-scale brightenings\, sol ar flares\, and stellar flares may be governed by a broadly common under lying physical mechanism.
